If you were watching the Seahawks take on the Broncos Sunday night, you might have seen a new ad for Monsanto’s America’s Farmers campaign. Whether you’re the type of person who watches “the big game” for the commercials or the football, we hope that ad meant as much to you as it did to us as part of the Monsanto family.
All advertising is viewed with a certain amount of skepticism these days. And rightfully so. We’ve all learned that it pays to raise an eyebrow when we’re promised something. But if you look past all the talking animals and pyrotechnics that are normally used in championship sporting event commercials, advertising is really just about getting people’s time and attention. It’s no different than grabbing a microphone or tapping a glass with silverware before a toast. And just as that time and attention can be used to sell something, it can also be used to say something.
We love the America’s Farmers ad because it says something important: that no matter where you live or what you do, agriculture is the foundation of our lives — a fact that most people don’t think about or simply don’t know.
On a night that focuses our nation’s attention so heavily on sports heroes, it was refreshing to acknowledge the unsung heroes that grow our food and make the world work. So whether your team won or lost, we hope you think, as we do, that last night was a win for American Agriculture and the vegetable growers who put food on our plates.
